The SSE Hydro Arena is a dramatic and iconic addition to Glasgow’s skyline, designed by the renowned London-based architects Foster and Partners. This distinctive venue is a centrepiece of Glasgow’s development plans and has quickly become one of the largest and most impressive multi-purpose arenas in the world, capable of seating up to 12,500 people.

One of the most striking features of the SSE Hydro Arena is its steeply tiered seating design, which offers excellent views from every angle. However, such a design required meticulous planning to ensure visitor safety, particularly for those navigating the arena’s steps during busy events. To address this, Artech Stepline Carborundum non-slip stair treads were specified as a critical component of the project. These inserts were installed to ensure maximum safety for all visitors, whether entering or exiting the venue, even under challenging conditions such as poor lighting or adverse weather.

The Stepline Carborundum non-slip treads not only provided a practical safety solution but also integrated seamlessly into the overall design of the arena. Their durable and high-performance finish complemented the sleek, modern aesthetic envisioned by Foster and Partners. At Artech Systems we also demonstrated exceptional efficiency in the supply chain, producing the large quantity required and coordinating precise delivery schedules to align with the complex construction programme managed by Lend Lease Construction.

We were proud to collaborate with a world-class team, including Foster and Partners, Quantity Surveyors Gardiner and Theobald, and Main Contractor Lend Lease Construction. The success of this collaboration is evident in the finished project, with a total of 900 metres of Artech Stepline Carborundum non-slip stair treads installed throughout the arena.

Today, the SSE Hydro Arena is a global venue for concerts, sporting events, and exhibitions, hosting millions of visitors each year. The combination of cutting-edge design, functionality, and safety features like Stepline Carborundum composite stair treads has cemented its reputation as one of the most prominent arenas in the world.
